Muchachas! I've been wanting to learn this forever, and today was the day!
I've been spending Monday mornings at the quilt shop drop-in sewing class taught by Janis and Margaret, and finally got around to doing this. I am so excited. They turn out so pretty with No Raw Edges. I loooove it. These were made with Heather Bailey's Pop Garden and Amy Butler's Daisy Chain lines.
Here's the instructions as I received them. Next time I make one, I'll take pictures as I go along. Let me know if this works out for you! They make Great gifts!
Pillow Case "Tube Method" with French Seams
(This makes an oversized standard pillow case)
Fabric Requirements:
Main fabric: 3/4 yard (pillow case will lay the way the selvedge runs, so if it's a directional print you will need 1 and 1/4 yards per pillow case for it to run the other direction.)
Cuff: 1/4 yard
Accent piece: 1/8 yard (you need 2.5" per case so this will be enough for two.)
Cutting:
1. Main fabric: Cut 26" x width of fabric (do NOT remove selvedges yet)
2. Cuff: Cut 9" x width of fabric (do NOT remove selvedges yet)
3. Accent piece: Cut 2.5" x width of fabric and fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.
Layer Pieces in this order:
#1 Cuff fabric - right side up
#2 Main fabric - right side up
#3 Accent piece raw edges even with the other two layers.
** At this point you may want to baste your seam a scant 1/4" across the top of all 3 pieces --- be careful that the raw edges are evenly aligned. **
- Roll up the main piece of fabric to the bottom of the folded accent piece - be careful to not let this get in the way of the seam.
- Bring up the bottom edge of the cuff fabric and lay it on top of the other layers.
- Carefully pin all raw edges even
- Sew a 1/4" seam across the top.
- Pull the main fabric out of your tube and press.
- Fold the pillow case in half, WRONG sides together, selvedges on the side and sew 1/4" along the bottom.
- Press the seam open or to the side and turn inside out
- Sew 3/8" to 1/2" seam RIGHT sides together. (this is a French seam)
- Trim the selvedges to even up the side edges.
- Sew the seam the WRONG sides together 1/4" and press the seam open or to the side.
- Turn inside out and sew 3/8 to 1/2" seam RIGHT sides together.
If using a directional print: Everything is done the same way except for the main piece of fabric. Trim selvedges from main fabric piece. Cut the main piece of fabric 44" x 26" (the 44" will run the length of the selvedge edge which is opposite of the "regular" pillow case way). The cuff and accent pieces will be the same sat the regular way. Sew the tube the same way, even up the sides, sew bottom seam first, then sew the side seam using the French seam method for both seams.
